This episode introduces a new character, Jack (famously voiced parents Zoe and Hamish Blake).
Jack is recounting the first day at his new school. On the way, he can’t sit still and forgot to pack his hat. Jacks sister asks why he can’t do as he’s told and he resignedly responds that he doesn’t know.
At school, teacher Calypso encourages him to join Rusty who is playing a game of ‘army’.
When asked if he can do as he is told, Jack hesitates, however after a few shouted commands by Rusty, he proves that he can in fact follow orders and is allowed to join the game.
They set off to learn basic skills where Rusty trains Jack in hand signals and push ups. They learn location names in case of a ‘dust off’ (helicopter evac), and take turns at sentry duty.
After some rations (morning tea), they set off on patrol but get ambushed by a bush turkey. They retreat and Rusty makes a distress call, asking Recruit Jack Russell for their location. Jack had already told Rusty that he wasn’t very good at remembering names and numbers, but after a bit of thinking, he remembers the correct location name!
Unfortunately the chopper can’t land so they have to run across the field - Jack gets to prove what a great runner he is, even overtaking Rusty!
Once they are safely in the helicopter (treehouse), Rusty asks why Jack has started at their school. Jack responds that it’s because there is something wrong with him - he can’t do as he’s told or sit still or remember things.
After a few moments of reflection, Rusty observes that he is great at playing army (which has required him to sit still and follow instructions all morning!)
They return from patrol and at pick up time, Rusty promotes Jack to ‘Private’. Rusty also gives Jack a tube of condensed milk that his Dad, who has just returned from patrol, gives to him. #imnotcryingyouare
